The Chisel Stroke

Not a metaphor. A procedure. How the blade enters white oak, how the shoulder yields, and why the angle is everything.

II. The Entry Angle

Position: Hold chisel at 15° from vertical, bevel facing the waste. Not 10°, not 20°. Fifteen degrees lets the bevel ride the surface while the edge bites the shoulder line.
Thumb Pressure: Apply downward force through the thumb pad on the upper handle, not the palm. This transmits vibration directly to the wrist, letting you feel the grain direction change.
The Tap: Light mallet strike—just enough to seat the edge. Listen for the tone change from ring to dull thud. Ring means air gap; thud means contact.

III. The Cut Sequence

From the shoulder line inward, in three passes:

  1. Score: One continuous shave along the shoulder line, removing 0.3mm. Establishes the reference plane.
  2. Par: Parallel cuts at 2mm intervals, each removing 0.5mm. Waste falls away in ribbons, not chips.
  3. Final: Single pass at 0.1mm thickness. The shaving curls completely around the blade.
Failure Mode: If the shaving splinters ahead of the edge, the angle is too steep. Lift 2° and reset. If the edge digs and tears backward, you're below 12°—lower the bevel.

IV. Grain Alignment

White oak from the Catawba River bend runs at a 3° spiral. Approach all cuts from uphill grain. Test with a thumbnail: press perpendicular to the face. If it catches, reverse direction.
